At approximately 9:30 this morning, a suspect armed with a handgun robbed the Wachovia Bank at 2600 Hillsborough Street. Following the robbery, a call from a witness was received by Emergency Communications providing a description of the suspect vehicle, which was a light blue minivan. That description was then broadcast.
A Raleigh Police Department officer saw the suspect vehicle driving recklessly on Fairview Road near Reid Street. Officers began following the suspect vehicle as it continued on Fairview Road to northbound Oberlin Road and then westbound on Glenwood Avenue.
RPD marked units attempted to initiate a traffic stop on Glenwood Avenue, but the suspect vehicle entered eastbound I-440 and exited southbound on Wake Forest Road. The vehicle continued traveling southbound on Capital Boulevard.
RPD officers deployed stop sticks on Capital Boulevard near Fairview Road in an attempt to end the pursuit before it entered the downtown area. The suspect vehicle struck the stop sticks and it exited onto westbound Wade Avenue.
The vehicle turned right onto Scales Street and its driver lost control. The vehicle struck the right curb before hitting a guy wire for a utility pole. The suspect jumped and ran from the vehicle. He was taken into custody a short time later in the 1100 block of Capital Boulevard.
The suspect has been identified as Rodney Williams Talley (DOB 6/30/79). He was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and numerous traffic violations.
