On Sunday, April 22, shortly before 7 a.m., Raleigh Police Department officers responded to a reported kidnapping at the BP gas station at 3616 Poole Rd. A complainant reported that a female had apparently attempted to exit a Ford Windstar minivan and two male suspects prevented her from doing so. The van then left the area; however, a witness was able to obtain its license plate information.
A thorough investigation commenced immediately to locate the vehicle and ensure the well being of the female involved. At approximately 10 a.m. the suspect vehicle was located in the 3000 block of Holston Lane. Two individuals matching the description of the suspects were observed attempting to leave the area in the van. Officers attempted to stop the suspect vehicle, but the driver refused to pull over, and a short vehicle pursuit resulted. The suspect vehicle struck another vehicle at the intersection of Poole and Sunnybrook roads. The suspect vehicle stopped shortly thereafter and both suspects were taken into custody. There were no other occupants in the van, and there were no serious injuries resulting from the collision.
The investigation continued and the female who had been in the van at the BP station was eventually located. She was not injured and denied being the victim of a crime.
The driver of the suspect vehicle, Isiah A. Owens, 23, was charged with several driving-related violations, including hit and run and speeding to elude police. The male passenger of the vehicle was not charged in connection with the original call or the subsequent pursuit. However, pending warrants for parole violations were served on the passenger, Shawn Jones, 24, and on Owens.
