Update: Officer Shot by Barricaded Subject

The Raleigh Police Department officer who was struck by gunfire is A.W. Young, 30, who has been employed by the department since June 2005. Officer Young is assigned to the Special Operations Division. He currently listed in stable condition.

After receiving a report concerning threats of suicide and possible violence that had been made by the suspect, Steven Gregory Meyer (DOB 9/28/63), Northwest District officers drove to the vicinity of his residence at 9321 Bothwell St. Two vehicles registered to Meyer were located there, and the district officers maintained surveillance until specialized units arrived.

Crisis negotiators were among the personnel who responded to the scene, and the negotiators made contact with Meyer. Despite telephone communication with him over several hours, the negotiators were unable to make any significant progress in their dealings with Meyer, and he continually refused to come out of his apartment.

When a departmental tactical team attempted to make entry to the residence shortly before 7:30 p.m. the apartment door had been barricaded from the inside, and the suspect fired several shots, striking Officer Young multiple times.

The gunfire was not returned by RPD personnel.

Officer Young was extricated from the immediate area, treated on scene by a tactical paramedic and transported.

After deploying tear gas into the apartment without response, entry was made at approximately 11 p.m.. The suspect was located inside, where he was deceased of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Raleigh Police Department is grateful for the understanding and support received from residents of the surrounding area, especially those whose apartments had to be evacuated during the incident.

  1. Mine too. I have several friends who are RPD officers so this hits very close to home.
